What Maths Extension 1 covers
Extension 1 runs across both Years 11 and 12, alongside the Advanced course rather than instead of it. It covers proof, vectors, further calculus and combinatorics, building on Advanced content at a faster pace and going into more depth. A tutor works through whichever topic is current at school, alongside the Advanced content it builds on.
Because Extension 1 moves faster than Advanced, a small gap can compound quickly if it is not addressed early. Sessions check understanding of the current topic against the Advanced foundation it depends on, not just the new Extension content on its own.
How Maths Extension 1 sessions run
A Maths Extension 1 session runs for 60 minutes, one to one or in a small group, in your home or at our Gregory Hills centre. The tutor teaching this course achieved a Band 6 in Mathematics Advanced, and a typical session works through worked examples, then timed questions from past Extension 1 papers.
A written note goes home after every session, and small group sessions at the centre are capped at six students in the same course, so a tutor still checks each student's own reasoning step by step.
Who Maths Extension 1 tutoring suits
This suits a student who is strong in Advanced Maths and is deciding whether to take on Extension 1, as well as a student already enrolled who is finding the pace or the extra topics harder than expected. It also suits a student who wants to keep Extension 2 open as an option in Year 12, since strong Extension 1 results are usually the basis for that decision.
It also suits a student moving from Year 11 into Year 12 who wants a genuine head start on the harder combinatorics and calculus content before the pace of the course picks up.
What parents can expect
