How to select subjects for Year 11 and 12.

Choosing subjects for Year 11 and 12 is one of the bigger decisions in a student's schooling, and it is worth taking seriously rather than rushing through the form. Here is a practical way to work through it.

1. Start with genuine interest. Subjects a student actually enjoys are usually the ones they put more effort into, which tends to show in the results. Interest is a reasonable starting filter, not the only one.

2. Check what future goals actually require. Some university courses and career paths have specific subject prerequisites. It is worth checking these directly with the university or training provider rather than assuming, since requirements do change.

3. Talk to people who know the options. Teachers, school careers advisers and subject coordinators can explain what a course actually involves day to day, not just its name on the handbook.

4. Confirm prerequisites before locking anything in. If a particular university course is the goal, check its assumed knowledge and prerequisite subjects before finalising a subject line.

5. Aim for a workable balance. A mix of subjects a student is confident in and one or two that stretch them is usually more sustainable than an all-or-nothing approach in either direction.

6. Be honest about strengths and workload. Some subjects will always take more effort than others for a given student. Factor that into the overall load, not just the subject list.

7. Think about time realistically. Extracurricular commitments, part-time work and downtime all need to fit around the subject load. A schedule that leaves no room for anything else rarely holds up for two years.

8. Ask older students what the reality was like. Someone who has just finished a subject can often give a more accurate picture of the workload than the course description does.

9. Keep an eye on any curriculum changes. NESA updates syllabuses from time to time. Check the current requirements for the specific subjects being considered rather than relying on what an older sibling studied.

10. Remember subjects can sometimes change. Most schools allow some flexibility to adjust a subject line early in Year 11 if something is clearly not working. It is worth knowing the school's own policy on this before the year starts.

In short

Choosing subjects for Year 11 and 12 comes down to weighing genuine interest, realistic strengths and actual course requirements against each other, not just picking what seems easiest or most impressive. Taking the time to check prerequisites and talk to people who know the subjects well makes the decision much less of a guess.
